Why is the FDA Attacking Dietary Supplements That Have Been Used Safely for Decades?

Once again we at JE Health Care Solutions is sounding the alarm.  The FDA now wants to take away your ability to get Natural Supplements.

 

Once again the FDA is looking out for the Big Drug Companies, instead of protecting the people.  In Dr. Mercola's article of April 23, 2012 he shows how the FDA is trying to bypass Congress by issuing "Draft Guidance on New Dietary Ingredients."

Over 60 Billion Doses a Year and Not ONE Death, But Still Not Safe?

Vitamins, minerals and herbal supplements have a tremendously safe track record, yet they are often singled out as being potentially dangerous by government agencies like the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

This – the notion that dietary supplements are unsafe -- is the premise behind the FDA's Draft Guidance on New Dietary Ingredients, which would require the supplement industry to prove the safety of natural ingredients that, in many cases, have been on the market and used safely for decades.

As new research from the American Association of Poison Control Centers' National Poison Data System reveals, there were zero deaths linked to nutritional supplements in 2010, the most current data available.

I strongly urge you to read this article and then contact you Reps. And Senators in Washington and demand that they stop the FDA from trying to bypass the:

  

Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 which states that:

"The Federal Government should not take any actions to impose unreasonable regulatory barriers limiting or slowing the flow of safe products and accurate information to consumers."

Please take action to protect your rights, and contact your Representatives now.  Dr. Mercola includes a sample letter in his post.  I also urge you to tell your Representatives to get the Big Drug companies out of the FDA and make it an agency that protects the people instead of protecting the drug companies profits. 

Please Support HR 1364 for "Free Speech About Science Act (HR 1364)

Congressmen Jason Chaffetz (R–UT) and Jared Polis (D–CO) have introduced the Free Speech about Science Act (HR 1364), a landmark legislation that would allow the flow of legitimate scientific and educational information.⁷ The new bill provides a limited and carefully targeted change to FDA regulations so that manufacturers and producers may reference legitimate, peer-reviewed scientific studies without converting a natural food or dietary supplement into an "unapproved drug." According to Rep. Chaffetz's website, the provisions of HR 1364 do the following⁸:

• Allow dietary supplements and healthy foods to cite legitimate scientific research
• Provide a clear definition of the types of research that may be referenced by growers and manufacturers
• Ensure that referencing such research does not convert a food or dietary supplement into an "unapproved (and therefore illegal) new drug"
• Retain the authority of FDA and FTC to pursue any fraudulent and misleading statements

According to Rep. Chaffetz⁹:

"It is important for individuals and families to take charge of their personal health by making the right decisions to get and stay healthy. This includes accessing information so that individuals can adjust habits, eat healthfully, and take appropriate dietary supplements to prevent and even treat health conditions.

The Free Speech About Science Act helps insure their access to legitimate scientific research to make the necessary decisions to improve their personal health and the health of their families."

Rep. Polis adds¹⁰:

"Today's science has shown that vitamins and nutritional supplements can offer successful, natural alternatives to drugs. As we begin to reform our nation's healthcare system, supplements are an innovative way to help reduce costs.

The Free Speech About Science Act is a common sense act that will make it easier for doctors and consumers to learn about the cheaper, healthier alternatives to costly medicines that food and nutritional supplements provide."

As of December 2011, HR 1364 is in the first step in the legislative process and has been referred to committee. The majority of bills never make it out of committee, so we need your help.

Please lend HR 1364 your support by signing on as a co-sponsor TODAY.

• The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) sent a warning letter to Diamond Food for making truthful, science-backed health claims about the omega-3 fats in walnuts
• Because the research cited health claims that omega-3 fats in walnuts may prevent or protect against disease, the FDA said walnuts would be considered “new drugs” and as such would require a new drug application to become FDA-approved
• Under current FDA law, if a food or natural supplement makes a medical claim, it's automatically classified as a drug
• Regulations currently prohibit manufacturers of dietary supplements or producers of food from referring to any scientific study documenting the potential effect of the substance on a health condition, punishable by large fines and even jail, even if the science is completely credible and true
• You can help by supporting the Free Speech about Science Act (HR 1364), a landmark legislation that would change FDA regulations so that manufacturers and producers may reference legitimate, peer-reviewed scientific studies without converting a natural food or dietary supplement into an "unapproved drug" 

This article shows how the FDA is totally controlled by the Big Drug companies. This bill would stop this bought and paid for agency from taking another Constitutional Right away from you.  As Dr Mercola asked in his article:

Is it Not a Constitutional Right to Share Truthful, Scientific Information?

This is so ridiculous, as censoring a food producer's right to inform others about scientific research is in violation of the first amendment. The American Association for Health Freedom (AAHF) states:

"The FDA ignores first amendment protections and censors the communication of valid scientific information. The agency seems to have lost sight of its mandate to protect the public and has instead come to see itself as the guardian of corporate interests."

Can you imagine the drug companies not being permitted to tell you what their products could do for you... do you think they would roll over for that? Not a chance, but they don't have to simply because they are the ones who can afford the FDA's approval process. With few exceptions, it's impossible for food producers to assume such costs for natural and therefore non-patentable products.

It's ludicrous for the FDA to require natural products to be "vetted" the same way as drugs. In nearly every case, natural products are safer and more effective than synthetic drugs, as science has shown, time and time again. Not to mention that natural agents are much less expensive than pharmaceuticals, and can even be grown in your backyard!

It's unfortunate that the FDA is so beholden to the drug industry that it would waste it's time to attack a walnut manufacturer for citing scientific research while allowing Frito Lay to claim that its Lay's potato chips are "heart healthy."

And walnut producers are not alone. Cherry growers have also been threatened by the FDA with jail time if their websites even contain links to scientific studies from Harvard and elsewhere, outlining the health benefits of cherries for gout or arthritis pain.⁴ Green tea growers have received similar threats. As I said, it truly boggles the mind…

I started this blog to inform and educate about the crisis that our health care delivery system is in.  Please understand that I am not saying business should not make a profit, because that is what business is suppose to do so they can create jobs.  What I do have a problem with,  is companies doing in my opinon unethical or at the very leased highly questionable practices that endanger people's lives.  The following article by Dr. Mercola : The Drug Companies' Newest Profit Weapon to Steal Your Money is a major case in point.  As I pointed out in my e-book Health Care Delivery System in America Has Failed (Download your free copy here) The Drug Industry takes a big part of your healthcare dollars.  I think this article makes a strong case for taking back control or your and your family's healthcare.  This is what we at AJ Health Care Solutions is here to help you do, with our Renco Direct and NACD and other programs we can help you take back control.

When you think about all the adds on TV, Newspapers, and every where else for the next wonder drug that is suppose to take care of this or that medical problem remember they are not saying that it is a cure, because it only treats the sympoms.  There is no money to be made if it will cure the illness.  When is the last time you have heard your doctor talk about a cure?  Just think who controls the FDA, how many people that are in lead positions in the FDA come from or go to work for the drug companies.

Yesterday in an email to my subscribers I wrote that everyday there is more support for the things I have been saying all along. The two stories you’ll read about and maybe read from my links both back up everything I’ve said from the beginning.

It’s no big surprise that you won’t find these two items of extreme importance out there anywhere. The pipeline that feeds us health care information squeezes off this kind of news while it clogs the conduit with blather and nonsense that feeds the health care delivery system. The reason of course is the health care delivery system feeds the pipeline.
I want to start out with one story you very likely might see. This one story that did somehow leak through today from PJTV that the flawed study that the President used to propel us into ObamaCare was flawed and inferior. It would not pass a peer review and some of the data was simply made up. In a speech before the American Medical Association in June of 2009 the President cited this study that supposedly crystallized the support of the AMA. Even the folks at PJTV didn’t get the fact that the AMA was behind the law from the beginning. Again I’m not surprised in the least.

Another is a story I found on Dr. Mercola’s site. It talks about the corruption in one of the health care delivery system’s sacred cows, the American Cancer Society. If you have read anything I’ve written for any period of time you’ll know that one of the oxes I gore on a regular basis is what I call Big Disease. Big disease is just as much a part of the health care delivery system as are the drug companies and the health insurance companies and of course the AMA. They, just like every other party in the system makes money – lots of money – from treatment and keeping people sick. Think of it this way. If a cure for cancer was actually accepted the American Cancer Society ceases to exist because their funding dries up. This is an interesting article.

and the last little bit of information comes from Dr Mercola as well.  It seems that Representatives Jason Chaffetz and Jared Polis have sponsored a bill to allow food and supplement companies to talk about the benefits of their products.
